Ski Lessons FAQ

I have never skied before, is Utah a good place to learn?
Utah is quite possibly the best place to learn to ski. With over 500 inches of annual snowfall ice is rarely encountered on the ski slopes. With soft snow learning is easier, and falling rarely hurts.

Are the ski slopes in Utah too steep to learn on?
Not only does Utah have the best steep skiing in the world, but it also has fantastic mellow slopes to learn on. Brighton ski resort is highly recommended for beginners as they have a large selection of beginner and intermediate runs.

Do I need to take a lesson?
Yes! Not only do lessons allow you to learn quicker, they are a lot of fun too. By the end of the day you will be cruising the mountain and having the time of your life.

Should I take a group or private lesson?
Both group and private lessons will get you skiing in a short amount of time. Group lessons are usually more reasonable and a lot of learning takes place by watching other skiers in the group learn. Private lessons are more expensive, but highly recommended especially for those skiers looking to improve their skills upon what is learned in the beginner group lessons.

Is my child too young to ski?It is not uncommon for local two and three year old children to begin skiing. Teaching a two year old child how to ski is not an easy task however, and usually requires a strong commitment from the parent. Four or five is a great age to begin learning and most ski resorts will have ski schools designed to teach children this age to ski.

Is my child too young to snowboard?
Snowboarding is more difficult to learn at a young age. If your child is under the age of seven, or has never skied before we recommend skiing. Most ski resorts do not have programs to teach children under the age of seven how to snowboard. If your child has his/her mind set on snowboarding by all means encourage it, but skiing until the age of seven is recommended by many.

Am I too old to begin skiing?
No! There are plenty of eighty plus year old skiers logging over 100 ski days a year. Skiing is a fun, low impact activity that is very easy to learn. We have found the fountain of youth in Utah, it is frozen and falls in the form of snow.

Which resort should I learn to ski at?
All ski resorts in Utah have excellent ski schools. If you have never skied before chances are you will only be able to enjoy a few beginner runs. Choose a resort that has a higher percentage of green runs, or a resort of lower ticket cost. In Big Cottonwood Canyon we recommend Brighton, In Little Cottonwood Canyon we recommend Alta.

Is there a certain ski or snowboard that makes learning easier?
Yes. Many ski shops rent skis that are designed to help beginner skiers and snowboarders learn to ride. They usually have a softer flex, and unique shapes that make turning simple. These skis are often called a "Sport Package" at ski rental shops. AJ Motion Sports has a large selection of skis and snowboards designed for beginners to learn on.
